A month or so ago at our Friday morning prayer meeting, Doug Kalvig made the following remark about God. He referred to Him as ‘the Maker of Days’. Of course, right away I thought about a similar phrase. One that is mentioned in Scripture. It is ‘Ancient of Days’. It is used 3 times in the Bible. All in Daniel 7. It is used to describe Jesus in His glorified state.
Maker of Days. That intrigued me. First of all, the word ‘Maker’ refers to God as Creator. One of the popular phrases, from our religious past, is when a person is close to death they are said to be going to ‘meet their Maker’. The ‘Days’ part of the phrase refers to time. Of course, as Creator, God not only created the Universe, He also created time. Time is something that does not exist in the endlessness of eternity. It was created by God. Strictly for humans. Humans live in time. They measure time. By minutes, days, years. God, and the things of God, are time-less.
So, putting it together, Maker of Days, speaks to my heart. Again, in our language, we often refer to a person or an event that ‘made our day’. Strictly speaking, however, God makes our day. What a thought this is to ponder for a while! God makes my day. God makes your day. He makes everybody’s day. And He does it day after day. This has several implications:
• First, we should enjoy our days. In Psalm 118:24 we are told, “This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
• Secondly, we should understand that life goes by very quickly. In Psalm 39:5 we are told that “Each man’s life is but a breath”.
• Thirdly, we should spend our days wisely. In Psalm 90:12 we are encouraged to “number of days that we may gain a heart of wisdom”.
• Finally, we should realize that our days are in God’s hands. In Psalm 31:15 the Psalmist says, “My times are in Your hands.”
Maker of Days. I like it. I’m going to try to remember this one. It really helps me to understand and appreciate God a little better.
Lord, thank you for the incredible gift of life. Thank you that You are the Maker of my days. May I rejoice in them. Realize their shortness. Spend them wisely. Put them in Your capable hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
